Let's Stand Together

Member Karlina Veras Reid asks women to be bold for change, together.

I’ve been sitting here, thinking of all the amazing women in the creative industries that have inspired me. And even though I can think of a few, I don’t think it is fair just to mention one and forget the others. What about the regular folks like you and me? What about the mothers, the daughters, the politicians that inspire us on a day-to-day basis? Therefore, I won’t mention anyone in particular, but what it means to be a woman in my view.

We live in uncertain times, given all the events happening in the world at the moment. But it is also a very interesting period because things can’t carry on as they have been for years. They won’t. Change is imminent and people everywhere are demanding it. Women are no exception. We have reached a tipping point. It’s enough. We demand the same rights, the same pay, the same treatment as our male counterparts. But it should not stop there. Demanding change is not good enough. It is time for us to realise that if society is to evolve into what we dream it to be, we must do it first. We are the ones that need to change. We need to be honest with ourselves. Honest about who we are, what we want and what we are giving to society in order to receive what we expect of it. Nothing in life comes for free and we must understand this if we are to make our dreams a reality.

Generally speaking, the first ones to follow stereotypes and educate their children in those ways are us women. Therefore, it is not good enough to simply admire successful women in their field. It is time for us women to come together, and change together. It is time to break this tradition of hatred and fear of the unknown. Yes, men and women should be treated and valued as they are, human beings. But we have to be open. Open to being responsible about our part in history and decide to no longer accept what we have created as a society. Let’s embrace who we are. All of us, humanity as a whole, by being bold for change.
